Novak: McConnell 'unassailable'

Today's edition of the Evans-Novak Political Report offers this on Kentucky political races:

Fresh from losing the nomination for lieutenant governor, state Atty. Gen. Greg Stumbo (D) has let out word that he is considering a run at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). McConnell is well funded and should be unassailable. Democrats would love to give him a hard time, putting one more Republican Senate seat on the map by fielding a credible candidate. Another potential Democratic candidate is millionaire businessman Charlie Owen. There is even some talk of a primary against McConnell -- a thinly veiled threat by some Republicans who feel that he did not do enough to help Gov. Ernie Fletcher (R) in his contested primary last month. Fletcher now trails in double digits for this November's re-election.

You gotta remember that Novak has a slant on this race--he likes Republicans.

McConnell is vulnerable. Look for several strong Democrats to be in a primary vying for the opportunity to take on McConnell.
Odds are a Democratic Presidential Candidate will carry Kentucky and will have some coat-tails. (Hillary could be the exception, but remember Bill carried KY twice!!)

There may be several strong Democrats in the primary including not only Stumbo but
Col. Andrew Horne, Charlie Owen and Crit Luallen.

Crit - Strong
Charlie - not strong (crazy)
Stumbo - not strong
Horne - not strong

Please don't post here again.
Thanks

You think Barack Obama or John Edwards can win KY?

Maybe--just maybe--it is worth noting Novak has a well-known conservative political bias. Pol Watchers is the politics blog of the only major newspaper in Central Kentucky, after all, and we should be able to expect some degree of objectivity and fairness.

charlie has the heart and the right positions and the money. he just need better people around him

Robert Novak is a right-wing political hack, but he's right about this one. McConnell is firmly entrenched, but a STRONG Democrat could pull a victory; not Stumbo. He has become a joke in this state, I'm afraid.

McConnel by his own admission and the research of the liberal leader is a fortune 500 company in his own right. He has raised over 100 million dollars for other candidates accross the US. He has given billions of dollars in government contracts to the people that gave the money. He can not be touched. Too many people owe him, it would not matter if all of Kentucky stated they were going to vote against him, it would be fixed. He can not be beat, he could stand on the 50 yard line naked at a UK football game and tell everyone to kiss his a_ _ and he could not be beat. He is probably more powerful than the president due to the money he has raised and given to contributors. So there you have it. Kentucky needs to prove this post wrong, I say it can not be done and that means he truly has too much power, and he does not use it for Kentucky. watch him flip on the immigration bill, he will.

Stumbo can beat Hal Rogers. McConnell? No way.

I would agree with that, Hal Rogers has gone the way of Jim Bunning, dementia. If Stumbo got Rogers to debate him two times, it would be over. Rogers has lost it. I would like someone else to beat Rogers, I do not think Stumbo is a servant of the people I can just see Daniel Boone Parkway which was renamed to Rogers Parkway, being renamed again, to Stumbo Parkway. I could also see the shrine built in Sommerset being renamed the Stumbo shrine rather than the rogers shrine. They are all the same.
